Jailed, fined for having imitation pistol component

Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old man, who was caught at the airport here for having an imitation pistol component, was jailed seven days and fined RM5,000 or six months' jail. 

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie ordered hotel worker Hiew Mick Foh, who had been under remand for seven days, to serve the jail term from the date of his arrest. 

Hiew earlier admitted to having an imitation pistol component at the baggage screening counter at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here at 3.30pm on Feb 24 this year. 

Inspector Suzie Kupit, prosecuting, told the court that on the said day, auxiliary police traced an object resembling a weapon believed to be a pistol in one the passenger's baggage. 

Hiew who was about to board a flight to Hong Kong was then detained. 

According to Hiew, he carried the pistol component, which was a gift from a friend in Hong Kong, as he wanted to sell it to a friend back in Hong Kong. 

He said such component was used in paintball games. 

Hiew also said that he did not know that carrying a weapon component resembling an actual weapon was an offence. 

The offence under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 carries a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM5,000 or both on conviction. 

Counsel Azhier Farhan, representing Hiew, told the court that Hiew works in the hotel line in Macau and returned to the State to visit his father who is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove kidney stones. 

He requested for a lowest fine, adding that Hiew had been under remand for seven days. 

In another case, four men were penalised for committing drug-related offences. 

Peter Johnny, Lester Lazurus, and Mohd Ibnu Taufik admitted to having syabu weighing 0.40gm, 0.28gm, and 0.12gm on Dec 30, 2016, Jan 5 and Jan 7 this year. 

Peter was fined RM4,500 or 12 months' jail, Lester was ordered to pay a fine of RM3,800 or 10 months' jail while Ibdu was jailed 12 months. 

The other man, Zainudin Akang was handed 10 months' jail for taking drugs. - Jo Ann Mool
